Old Map of Bedford, Pennsylvania by USGS, 1910 – Hyndman, Schellsburg & Raystown Branch Juniata River

Published in 1910 by the United States Geological Survey, “Bedford” presents a richly detailed topographical portrait of south-central Pennsylvania at the opening of the twentieth century. Centered on the historic borough of Bedford, the map extends across a landscape of ridges, valleys, roads, railways, farms, and waterways, all rendered at the practical and revealing scale of 1:62,500. Its warm palette of oranges and browns gives immediate visual drama to the relief, while finely drawn contour lines translate the folded Appalachian terrain into an elegant cartographic language. More than a utilitarian survey, the map captures a region poised between rural continuity and modern connection, where long-established settlements were increasingly linked by transportation corridors and federal mapping science.

The US Geological Survey, founded in 1879, brought a new standard of precision and consistency to American mapmaking, and this Bedford sheet reflects that ambition. USGS topographic maps were created not merely to show where places were, but to explain how the land itself was shaped: the rise of ridgelines, the direction of drainage, the passage of roads through gaps and valleys. In an era before aerial mapping became commonplace, such work depended on field survey, triangulation, and painstaking compilation. The result is both scientific and beautiful: a disciplined composition in which contour intervals, watercourses, settlements, and routes together form a readable anatomy of the countryside. It is a compelling example of federal cartography at its early twentieth-century maturity.

Bedford itself occupies the heart of the map, a town already distinguished by its colonial-era origins, mineral springs, and strategic position along routes through the Alleghenies. Around it appear communities including Union, Klondike, Fishertown, Pleasantville, New Paris, Centerville, Hyndman, Wellersburg, and Schellsburg, each set into the terrain with understated precision. The Raystown Branch of the Juniata River threads through the region, accompanied by smaller streams and valleys that reveal the hydrological logic of the landscape. Roads and railways connect the populated places, showing how settlement followed the easier passages between hills and along river corridors. The map therefore records not only geography, but the pattern of human movement across a demanding and beautiful mountain region.

The topographic character of the Bedford area is the great visual subject of this sheet. East, West, and South slopes and mountains shape the composition, their long forms expressed through close, rhythmic contouring. The Appalachian Ridge-and-Valley province is especially well suited to this style of mapping: elevations rise and fall in elongated folds, creating parallel chains of high ground, sheltered hollows, and narrow transportation corridors. The warm color scheme heightens this sense of structure, allowing hills and valleys to emerge almost sculpturally from the page. Even unnamed streams, lakes, and ravines contribute to the map’s richness, reminding the viewer that the region’s human history has always been negotiated through its geology and relief.

As a historical document, the 1910 “Bedford” map preserves a moment before many of the twentieth century’s transformations altered the surrounding countryside. Since its creation, Bedford County has experienced changes in road systems, land use, settlement patterns, industry, and population distribution, yet this sheet records an earlier spatial order with unusual clarity. Small towns appear in relation to rail lines and rural roads rather than highways; rivers and valleys still dominate the organization of movement; and the landscape reads as a network of local communities embedded in mountain terrain. For collectors, historians, and admirers of fine cartography, it offers both aesthetic pleasure and a grounded view of Pennsylvania’s evolving American landscape.
