FRANCE : BURGUNDY : COTE D'OR
ORGANIC : Chardonnay
FULL-BODIED, CANDIED ORANGE, YELLOW PEACH, WHITE PEPPER, SEA SALT, OAK
< style="margin: 0;">François Mikulski farms 1.5 hectares of Chardonnay on the lower slopes bordering Meursault, from two parcels planted in 1986 and 2005. The soil is fine alluvial river sediment, and the domaine's own note is that the wine takes on Meursault's characteristics anyway: length in the mouth, rich, keeps well.
2023 was the rare Burgundy year that gave both quality and quantity. Berry Bros. & Rudd's Adam Bruntlett found the whites more transparent and more typically Burgundian than the 2022s, if without that vintage's concentration, with acidity, fruit and alcohol in harmony and no single element dominating.
Vinification is native yeasts, roughly ten months in oak barrel and two more in tank before bottling, with new wood kept to a small share. This vintage runs spicy and candied: orange and yellow peach, peppercorn and star anise, closing salty and long.
< style="margin: 0;">PAIRINGS :
| Pan-fried scallops with curry | the producer's own 2023 pairing; spice in the pan meets spice in the glass |
| Crispy Cantonese pork belly | salt and fat against a saline, peppery finish |
| Fried squid with lemon | acidity and citrus cut straight through the batter |
